Bibles, Bibles, Everywhere…

Poverty and Justice BibleA while ago I wrote about Bible Illuminated – a slick and sexy magazine-style publication of the New Testament. It seems that there are Bibles to suit the taste and convictions of a wide demographic of people, as the other day I stumbled upon the Poverty and Justice Bible.

This Bible is written in a contemporary English style, and all verses that have some relation to God’s attitude to poverty and injustice have been highlighted to show the reader how frequent and prevalent poverty and justice are mentioned within the Scriptures.

This  is not a book review nor a critique of the Poverty and Justice Bible – although it is interesting to note that if we were to omit the thousands of verses about the Bible’s views of injustice and concern for the poor, we’d be reading a different book!

Check out their website here.

I’d also recommend you to read Major Geoff Ryan’s insightful little essay about how he wants his own Bible too. Read his thoughts here.

What is Biblical Justice?

Major Campbell RobertsOver the next few days I will be posting up some thoughts from Major Campbell Roberts of The Salvation Army on the centrality of Biblical justice.

The text is taken from the 2006 Coutts Memorial Lecture at The Salvation Army College of Further Education in Sydney, Australia. Here’s an introduction:

The Centrality of Biblical Justice

There are over 800 references to righteousness and justice in Scripture. Drawing heavily on the work of Dr Chris Marshall, I highlight five biblical themes that are relevant as we consider the central place justice should play in the life of The Salvation Army in our contemporary world.

1. Justice is based in the character of God

2. To know God requires doing justice

3. True justice restores right relationships

4. Biblical justice has a partiality to it

5. Jesus is the incarnation of the Justice of God
