Volunteering is Sexy?

27 05 2009

VolunteerAccording to this article if you’re feeling lonely and need to prop up your dating chances then volunteering is the answer! Volunteering allows you to meet new people and then when you’re out on the town nothing is more attractive than telling your desired boyfriend/girlfriend all about about your volunteering and impressing them with your ‘goodness’.

Hmmm…I can see the logic behind all this and I’d recommend volunteering or serving as a brilliant way to strengthen your relationships with others. But whatever happened to simply volunteering because you wanted to add value to others? What happened to volunteering and serving in silence or secretly.

Imago Dei…Made in the image of me?

22 05 2009

Creation of AdamThe concept and theological doctrine of Imago Dei, Latin for image of God, speaks of the fact that all people are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). We then interpret this to say that thus all people have inherent value and worth and that no man woman or child is less valuable than the next, regardless of race, sex, culture, place of birth, orientation, economic prosperity, lifestyle, tastes, attitudes, skin colour etc. etc. A great quote by Bono from the band U2 captures some of the spirit of the doctrine of Imago Dei.

“Where you live should no longer determine whether you live”.

It’s a beautiful doctrine and one that I personally hold very close to my heart. It helps me to see the good in any person no matter how broken or wounded they are, and despite how poor their behaviour is, as several of the people we work with at Streetlevel and Oasis exhibit some of these!

You call this a church?

21 05 2009

Kolkata PastorThis guy’s doing it all wrong. He’s the pastor of a church in Kolkata, India that’s partnering with Compassion International – he says to “serve” kids in his community.

Pete and I saw a lot of unchurchy stuff going on at this church.

Shaun Groves reports on a lot of unchurchy stuff going down here.

The Awakening Continues

Paul and Robbin Training Change Young Adults

Paul and Robbin Training Change Young Adults

You might remember that a few months ago we made a post referencing that we would be attending and talking up Edify and Sexy Justice at Christian City Church’s Young Adults Conference – Awakening. Well since then I’m happy to report there has been an incredible work of unity and partnership between us. Basically post conference we all sat down and strategised what would be the best way forward to see their young adults trained up and connected into area’s of need. It was decided that they had an abundance of young adults who are passionate and have time to give and that in the inner-city we had several young people who needed a big brother/sister and someone to come alongside them, so we developed an Oasis Mentoring Program, where by young adults from Change would come in fortnightly and connect with individual young people from the Oasis Youth Support Network.

Over the last 5 weeks myself and Robbin and Paul Moulds have been delivering training in various relevant areas to the 90 young adults from Change who expressed an interest in taking this challenge to come alongside at-risk and disadvantaged young people.  Each week the interested young adults would gather a full hour before Change started to receive teaching and we concluded with Q&A and prayer.

We started 5 weeks ago with approximately 90 young adults and last Wednesday we finished with 50, in my mind a great effort. Attached below is a photo from the final night, a formidable looking bunch wouldn’t you say?

Oasis Mentor TrainingWould you join with me in praying for these guys as they begin to walk out and live out all of the training that has been sowed into them, we’re believing for some amazing things to come out of this partnership, but we also recognise there is going to be some challenges so they’ll need support. My challenge is for all the conferences and forums that  I attend and for all the incredible seed that’s sown into my life, what fruit am I bearing?

Jesus designed us to bear fruit, Luke 13:6-9, are you walking the talk?

Bibles, Bibles, Everywhere…

27 04 2009

Poverty and Justice BibleA while ago I wrote about Bible Illuminated – a slick and sexy magazine-style publication of the New Testament. It seems that there are Bibles to suit the taste and convictions of a wide demographic of people, as the other day I stumbled upon the Poverty and Justice Bible.

This Bible is written in a contemporary English style, and all verses that have some relation to God’s attitude to poverty and injustice have been highlighted to show the reader how frequent and prevalent poverty and justice are mentioned within the Scriptures.

This  is not a book review nor a critique of the Poverty and Justice Bible – although it is interesting to note that if we were to omit the thousands of verses about the Bible’s views of injustice and concern for the poor, we’d be reading a different book!

Check out their website here.

I’d also recommend you to read Major Geoff Ryan’s insightful little essay about how he wants his own Bible too. Read his thoughts here.
